Major Atlanta Creeks, Rivers Under Flood Warnings

PEACHTREE CITY, GA — Many metro Atlanta rivers and creeks are under flood warnings, as a round of heavy rains and storms began hammering the area Thursday night, a deluge that isn’t expected to stop until sometime next year.

On Friday morning, the National Weather Service issued flood warnings for Peachtree Creek in Atlanta, DeKalb and Fulton counties; Nancy Creek in Buckhead; Proctor Creek in Fulton County; the Chattahoochee River near Vinings Paces Ferry Road near Cobb and Fulton counties; Crooked Creek near Norcross; Nancy Creek West Wesley Road in Atlanta; North Fork Peachtree Creek in Atlanta and affecting DeKalb and Fulton counties; Allatoona Creek near Mars Hill affecting Cobb County; Pew Creek near Lawrenceville affecting Gwinnett County; and Big Creek near Alpharetta affecting Forsyth and Fulton counties.

Forecasters say showers and a few thunderstorms will move across metro Atlanta through Friday night, with locally heavy rain and brief strong wind gusts expected, especially in the higher terrain of north Georgia. A flash flood watch is in effect through Saturday morning.

Several rounds of showers will continue into next week, with isolated thunderstorms possible Monday and Tuesday. Much of metro Atlanta could see 2 to 4 inches of additional rainfall, with locally higher amounts possible. This rainfall will increase the river and stream flood threat once again as grounds remain wet from recent rains. Localized flash flooding will also be a concern in flood prone areas.
